The Western shade opportunity
The West is the sunniest, most outdoor-obsessed region in America, and the one where shade is the most obviously non-negotiable. Phoenix triple digits, Las Vegas blast-furnace summers, Southern California’s eternal golden hour, the mountain states’ thin-air UV: across thirteen states, the conversation is not whether to shade, it is which product survives the sun. That is a conversation a premium American-made line with a 15-year warranty wins before it starts.
The region’s indoor-outdoor culture does the pre-selling. Western homes are designed around the patio: sliding walls of glass, outdoor kitchens, pool decks, and view lots where the whole point is the outside. Homeowners here already budget for outdoor living the way other regions budget for kitchens. A dealer’s job is not to create the desire, it is to show up with the best-engineered answer when the desire is already there.
One important boundary: AJ Shades installs directly in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Everywhere else in the West, the other 45-plus counties of California, the entire mountain region, the desert Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, and Alaska, is dealer territory, served by local dealers and trusted contractors with full factory support. The map is enormous and almost entirely open.
Sun, but make it specific
How the West breaks down
The desert Southwest. Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, and the Coachella-adjacent markets are the most extreme shade markets in America, where the right product is the difference between a usable patio and an abandoned one. Extreme UV destroys cheap fabrics on schedule; American-made acrylics with serious UV ratings are the specification. Monsoon-season microbursts add the wind-sensor story. Dealers here sell performance, measured in degrees.
California beyond our counties. Northern California, the Bay Area, Sacramento, the Central Valley, plus the Central Coast, the Sierra foothills, and the far north form a huge dealer landscape outside AJ Shades’ direct-install zone. Coastal salt air, valley heat, and mountain snow each demand their own specification, which is exactly what dealer training covers. The brand recognition from Southern California travels north; the territory is yours to harvest.
The mountain states and the Pacific Northwest. Denver’s Front Range, the Wasatch Front, Boise’s growth wave, and Montana’s resort corridor bring altitude UV, sudden storms, and second-home economics. Seattle and Portland swing from months of drizzle to brilliant, high-UV summers, retractable systems that appear for the sun and vanish for the rain are the native answer. Hawaii and Alaska cap the region: year-round lanai living on one end, midnight-sun intensity on the other, and virtually no premium competition in either.
What Western dealers sell
Retractable Awnings
The sun-country flagship: American-made retractable awnings with UV-rated fabrics built for desert intensity and mountain altitude alike, deploying for the heat, retracting for monsoon gusts, by hand, app, or wind sensor.
See the dealer lineup →Motorized Power Screens
The heat-load answer: zip-track screens that cut solar heat on west-facing glass across the desert Southwest and inland valleys, comfort measured in degrees, energy savings measured in dollars. The West’s hardest-working product.
Explore power screens →Automation & Options
The second-home edge: wind sensors for desert microbursts and coastal gusts, sun sensors for brutal western exposures, app control for the owner splitting time between homes. In the West’s resort markets, automation is the standard expectation.
