Montana sells itself on the outdoors, but the fine print surprises people: at elevation, UV intensity is brutal, summer afternoons on a south-facing deck can be punishing, and the bugs arrive with the evening like clockwork. From Bozeman's growth corridor to the Flathead Valley to Billings, homeowners are pouring money into decks, patios, and outdoor kitchens, and discovering that without shade and screens, the space they just built is only comfortable for a few hours a day. Retractable awnings tame the high-altitude sun. Motorized power screens reclaim the evening. In a state where the outdoor season is short and sacred, maximizing every hour of it is an easy value proposition.

AJ Shades is a veteran-owned American manufacturer headquartered in Southern California, building a nationwide network of independent dealers for our Quality Improvement Products line, motorized power screens, open-roll retractable awnings, and full-cassette awnings. Here's the model without the gloss: AJ Shades' own installation crews serve only Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties). As a Montana dealer, you sell and install our products in your own market. We supply them wholesale, train you on the line, and back every awning and screen with our 15-year factory warranty.

The Montana buyer profile is unusually strong for this category: relocating professionals, second-home owners, and ranch-property buyers who are already spending heavily on their outdoor spaces and who buy premium without apology. Dealers buy manufacturer-direct at wholesale and keep the retail margin, no distributors, no rep layers. With essentially zero premium shade competition statewide, early dealers in Bozeman, Missoula, Billings, and the Flathead get to define the category in their market.

One thing to understand up front: our own install teams work exclusively in Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties). Your dealership covers your market, you sell, you install, you keep the customer relationship. We supply the products wholesale and back them with the factory warranty.

Montana's growth story is your tailwind: Bozeman and the Flathead keep adding households with serious outdoor-living budgets, and every one of those households is a first-time shade buyer. Being early in a growth market beats being better in a crowded one, and right now, this market is as uncrowded as it gets.

The market waiting for a dealer

Your Montana territory, mapped

Deck and outdoor-living builders

The core partner. Every high-end deck project in Gallatin County or the Flathead is incomplete without shade, make the awning or screen package the finishing line item, not an afterthought.

Luxury home builders and remodelers

Montana's custom-home market keeps growing, and architects are designing bigger glass and bigger decks. Get specified early or retrofit after, the product fits both.

Ranch and lodge property managers

Guest ranches and vacation properties from Big Sky to Whitefish compete on the outdoor experience. Shaded, screened gathering spaces are exactly the amenity that earns five-star reviews.

Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley lead on growth, with Missoula, Billings, Great Falls, Helena, and the Flathead Valley (Kalispell, Whitefish) as strong markets. Apply and we'll confirm territory availability.

Montana dealer FAQ

Questions Montana businesses ask us

Does the altitude affect the products?
It affects the sales pitch more than the product. UV intensity climbs with elevation, which is exactly why UV-stable, solution-dyed fabrics matter, cheap fabrics chalk and fade fast at 4,000-plus feet. Our fabrics and powder-coated hardware are specified for harsh sun, the same conditions they handle across the inland West.
What about Montana winters?
Both lines retract into protective housings for the off-season, the full-cassette awning seals the fabric completely, and motorized screens roll up into their cassette. Nothing is left exposed to snow load or freeze-thaw cycles. Spring deployment takes minutes.
How do I handle the wind in open country?
Honestly and by product: retractable awnings are fair-weather products with wind sensors for automatic retraction, and exposed ridgetop sites may call for motorized screens instead, they stay deployed through serious wind. Training covers site-by-site product selection.
I'm a contractor, not a retailer. Does that work?
It's the preferred profile. Most of our dealers are contractors who measure, sell, and install. Dealer training covers the product line, controls, and positioning, and a working display, your own deck is ideal, does the heavy selling.
What's the wholesale arrangement?
Approved dealers order from the wholesale catalog at dealer pricing, which isn't published on the website. You set your own retail pricing for the Montana market. Manufacturer-direct, no middlemen.
Is there really demand for premium shade in Montana?
Follow the money: the state is adding high-end homes and outdoor-living spending at a remarkable clip, and the premium shade category is essentially unserved. The dealer who establishes the category first in Bozeman, Missoula, or Billings gets the compounding advantage.
Montana has real winters, is there a shade business here?
The season is short and the money is concentrated, which is exactly the dealer math that works. Bozeman and Missoula keep adding high-income transplants building big outdoor spaces; the ranch and resort properties around Big Sky and Whitefish spend on outdoor living like it is a second-home market, because half of it is. The summer sun at altitude is intense, the evenings are perfect, and retractable products that deploy for July and vanish for January are the honest specification. One focused dealer covering the western half of the state can build a serious business on the summer rush alone.
How do you sell shade in a state famous for winter?
By selling the summer honestly, and it is a spectacular summer. Montana’s outdoor season is short, intense, and deeply valued: long daylight, perfect evenings, and a population that lives outside from June through September. High-altitude sun is stronger than newcomers expect, which makes the UV story easy to tell. The pitch is concentrated value: a retractable system that earns its keep every single day of the short season and vanishes for the snow months. Bozeman transplants arrive with big-city budgets and bigger decks; ranch and resort properties spend like the second-home market they are. Short season, premium tickets, honest specification, the math works.
