Motorized Screens: Comfort at the Touch of a Button
Sun blasting under your patio cover? Bugs crashing dinner? Drop-down power screens block heat, glare, and bugs at the touch of a button, Somfy motors, storm rails, and a 15-year warranty, installed by veteran-owned AJ Shades.
You built the patio. You bought the furniture. But come late afternoon, the low sun blasts straight under your cover, the heat radiates off the concrete, and by evening the bugs arrive like they got an invitation. Sound familiar?
Motorized screens solve all three at once. Mounted discreetly under your patio cover, pergola, or eave, they drop down at the touch of a button to block sun, heat, glare, and insects, then retract completely out of sight when you want your open view back. It’s the closest thing to having walls you can summon and dismiss on demand.
“Great service, easy communication from start to finish and product is wonderful”

The mesh is the magic: high-performance screen fabric that cuts UV and heat dramatically while preserving your outward view. From inside, it’s like putting on good sunglasses, everything is still visible, just comfortable. From outside during the day, it adds real privacy. And with storm rails (side tracks) locking the fabric in place, there’s no flapping or billowing when the afternoon wind picks up.
We power every system with Somfy motors, quiet, dependable, and controllable by remote, wall switch, or your phone. Run each screen independently or drop them all together. Add sun and wind sensors and the system can adjust itself: lowering for shade when the sun hits, retracting for protection when the wind rises.
Motorized screens pair beautifully with our retractable awnings and patio covers, many of our customers combine a cover overhead with screens on the sides for a fully enclosed-feeling outdoor room. During your free estimate we’ll measure, show you mesh samples, and give you a clear written quote. And with financing options(flexible financing options for qualified buyers), the premium setup doesn’t have to wait.

Motorization
Powered by Somfy, the best motors in the business
A motor is the heart of any motorized screen or awning, and not all motors are equal. Here's who builds ours, and why it matters.
The motors inside your screens & awnings
Somfy® Motors
Born in Cluses, France in 1969, the global leader in motors and controls for window coverings, with over 100 million motors sold worldwide.
Strong, intelligent, quiet motors purpose-built for awnings and exterior screens, smooth, dependable operation year after year
RTS wireless control: run everything from a handheld remote, a wireless wall switch, timers, your phone, or your voice
TaHoma® by Somfy app: control your screens and awnings from anywhere, build scenes, set schedules, and come home to the patio opening itself. Works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
Automatic weather protection: add sun and wind sensors and the system reacts on its own, a wind sensor retracts the awning in strong gusts even when you're away
Cordless by design, no dangling cords, a safer choice for homes with kids and pets
Why we're particular about motors: Every Somfy motor is tested and inspected at the factory before it ever reaches your home, the brand's own standard for long-term reliability. It's the biggest reason we chose Somfy to power our systems.
When your installer quotes Somfy, you’re getting the motors the rest of the industry is measured against. During your free estimate, we’ll show you exactly how the remote, app, and sensors work together, so day-to-day use stays practically effortless.
Storm engineering
Why the premium build matters
Santa Ana gusts, desert dust, coastal salt, every screen we install is specified for real conditions and stated in writing on your estimate.
Somfy motors
The industry-standard tubular motor, rated for daily cycling and the full temperature swing, quiet, reliable, and serviceable for the long haul.
Zip-track storm rails
The screen edge locks into the side track on a zipper, tensioned on all four sides so gusts can’t billow, flap, or pull it free.
Wind-sensor auto-retract
The sensor watches your exposure and retracts the screens automatically when gusts build, protection that works whether you are home or not.
15-year warranty
Every motorized power screen we install carries our 15-year warranty, the engineering above is what lets us stand behind it in writing.

Why premium?
“The most expensive screen is the one you buy twice.”
Twitchell and Phifer mesh, UV-stable weaves that keep their color and keep your view
Zip-track storm rails, the screen edge locks into the track, tensioned on all four sides. No flapping, no billowing
Somfy motors, quiet, serviceable, rated for daily cycling through the full temperature swing
Wind sensor that retracts the screens on its own when gusts build, whether you're home or not
15-year warranty on awnings and screens, coverage varies by product and component
Measured, programmed, and installed by our own veteran-owned crew, never day labor
The cheap alternative
A porch-screen rewind kit repackaged as “motorized”
Loose-sided screens that billow like sails every windy afternoon
A weak motor that strains, stalls, and burns out in two seasons
Mesh that sags, chalks, and rips, view ruined, bugs back in
A “warranty” that vanishes the first time you try to call it in
FAQ
Screen questions, answered straight
What do motorized screens actually do?
They're drop-down screens, usually mounted under your patio cover, pergola, or eave, that lower at the touch of a button to block sun, heat, glare, and bugs, then retract out of sight when you don't need them. Think of them as walls you can summon.
Will they hold up in wind?
Yes. We install screens with storm rails (side tracks) that keep the fabric taut and secure in windy conditions. Combined with quality mesh and a Somfy motor, the system is built for real Southern California weather, not just calm days.
Can I still see through them?
Absolutely, that's the point. The mesh blocks up to 90%+ of UV and dramatically cuts heat and glare while preserving your view outward. From inside looking out, it's like wearing good sunglasses. From outside, daytime privacy increases substantially.
How are they controlled?
Remote, wall switch, or smartphone via Somfy controls. You can operate each screen independently or all together, and add sun/wind sensors for automatic operation.
Do motorized screens help with bugs?
Dramatically. Lowered screens create a sealed barrier on open sides of your patio, evening dinners without the mosquito swarm. It's one of the most-mentioned benefits in our customer feedback.
Can motorized screens be used in the rain?
In light rain, yes, the mesh sheds water and the storm rails keep the fabric locked in its tracks. In heavy wind-driven rain, we recommend retracting the screens, just as you would an awning. During your estimate we'll walk through what's sensible for your exposure.
Are motorized screens waterproof?
They deflect serious rain but aren't a sealed waterproof roof, think of them as a weather barrier, not a lid. For true all-weather coverage, many customers pair screens with a solid patio cover overhead.
How long do motorized screens typically last?
It varies by system, fabric, and exposure, quality systems last many years with basic care. Somfy motors are built for long-term reliability, and our screen fabrics are engineered for years of UV exposure. Your written proposal and warranty documents identify the exact coverage for your system.
What happens if the power goes out?
The screens stay exactly where they are, they won't drop or retract on their own. Somfy systems include a manual override, and we'll show you how it works on installation day.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, through Enhancify and Wisetack, with flexible financing options for qualified buyers and access to over 30 lenders. One application, then you choose the terms that fit your budget.
