Nobody in Hawaii needs to be sold on outdoor living, the lanai is where life happens, morning coffee to pau hana. What island homeowners do need is control over it: tropical sun that punishes west-facing lanais by mid-afternoon, vog and glare that drive everyone back inside, and trade-wind gusts that turn fixed shade structures into maintenance headaches. Retractable awnings and motorized power screens are built for exactly this, shade on demand, bug and glare control at the touch of a button, and hardware engineered for coastal conditions, including powder-coated components that stand up to salt air.

AJ Shades is a veteran-owned American manufacturer headquartered in Southern California, now building a nationwide dealer network for our Quality Improvement Products line: motorized power screens, open-roll retractable awnings, and full-cassette awnings. Here's the model in plain terms: AJ Shades' own installation crews serve only Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties). A Hawaii dealer sells and installs our products across the islands. We supply wholesale, train you on measuring, specification, and controls, and back every awning and screen with our 15-year factory warranty.

The island math is compelling. Hawaii's construction and remodeling costs are among the highest in the nation, which means the homeowners already spending on lanai renovations are premium buyers by definition, and premium buyers are exactly who purchase premium shade. Dealers buy manufacturer-direct at wholesale, keep the retail margin, and face almost no premium competition across the islands. Between Oahu's density, Maui's resort corridor, and the Big Island's new construction, a single focused dealer can build a serious business.

The division of labor is simple and dealer-friendly: AJ Shades manufactures in Southern California and installs only in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Everywhere else, including your market, our dealers sell and install, buying manufacturer-direct at wholesale and keeping the full retail margin.

One practical note for island dealers: lead with the lanai, not the house. Hawaii homeowners think in terms of their outdoor room, and the sale is won or lost on how the product looks and feels in that space. A single working screen on a west-facing lanai, demonstrated at 3 PM on a trade-wind afternoon, has closed more island deals than any catalog ever printed.

The market waiting for a dealer

Your Hawaii territory, mapped

Lanai and outdoor-living contractors

The most natural fit on the islands. Every lanai cover, pergola, and outdoor kitchen project is a shade project waiting for its finishing product, and you're already on site talking to the homeowner.

Resort, hotel, and vacation-rental outfitters

Hospitality lives on guest comfort. Motorized screens on restaurant lanais and retractable awnings over pool decks are exactly the upgrades property managers approve when they see the guest-experience payoff.

Pool builders and patio contractors

Island pools get used year-round, and the deck around them gets brutal midday sun. Shade is the difference between a pool that's used daily and one that's abandoned by 1 PM.

Oahu is the density play, Honolulu, Kailua, and the west side growth corridor. Maui's resort and residential corridor, the Kona and Hilo sides of the Big Island, and Kauai's residential markets round out the territory. Apply and we will talk through island-by-island availability.

Hawaii dealer FAQ

Questions Hawaii businesses ask us

Do your products handle salt air?
They're built for coastal conditions: powder-coated aluminum hardware, stainless fasteners, and UV-stable fabrics, the same specification we ship to coastal Southern California. The full-cassette awning is especially popular near the water because the sealed housing protects the fabric when retracted.
What about trade winds and sudden gusts?
Honest answer: retractable awnings are fair-weather products. They carry wind sensors that retract the awning automatically when gusts hit, and Hawaii dealers learn to spec and position accordingly. Motorized screens handle wind far better and stay deployed through serious trade-wind afternoons, they're often the lead product on exposed sites.
How does shipping to the islands work?
Dealer orders ship from our Southern California operation, West Coast to Hawaii is a lane we run regularly. Freight and lead times are part of the dealer onboarding conversation so you can quote delivery accurately from day one.
Can a contractor without a storefront become a dealer?
Absolutely. Most of our dealers are contractors, not retailers. What you need is the ability to measure, sell, and install, training covers the product line, and a working display (even on your own lanai) does the selling.
What's the wholesale arrangement?
Approved dealers order from the wholesale catalog at dealer pricing, which isn't published online. You set retail pricing for your island market. The margin is designed to support a real business on realistic project volume.
Do you offer dealer exclusivity by island?
Territory is part of the application conversation. We recruit deliberately rather than densely, we'd rather have one strong dealer per market than five weak ones. Apply and we'll discuss what's open.
How do the products handle Hawaii’s trade winds and salt air?
They are specified for exactly that. Powder-coated aluminum, stainless fasteners, and solution-dyed fabrics that hold color under the strongest UV in the American market, the same coastal specification we ship across Southern California, tuned for the trades. The lanai is the Hawaiian living room, and motorized screens turn it into a bug-free, glare-free room with one button. Wind sensors are standard conversation here: the trades are daily, and honest engineering means the awning retracts before the gusts, not after. Hospitality and condo work is the bonus lane, resorts and HOAs replace shade constantly.
Which islands should a Hawaii dealer prioritize?
Oahu first for volume, Honolulu’s density, the condo and HOA market, and the steady residential base make it the revenue engine. Maui and the Big Island bring the resort and second-home premium work, where the tickets are larger and the specifications more demanding. Kauai is smaller but loyal: once you are the shade answer on an island, word travels. The practical play is basing on Oahu and running scheduled installation trips to the neighbor islands, batching jobs the way every successful Hawaii contractor already does.
