Awning Repair
Awning Repair & Fabric Replacement
A torn cover, a dead motor, or bent arms don't have to mean a new awning. We repair and reskin retractable awnings across Southern California, honest diagnosis, real parts, and the judgment to tell you when replacement is actually smarter.

Every October and November, the Santa Anas arrive, and our phone rings. Wind-torn fabric, bent arms, motors that gave up the ghost in the middle of a gust: wind season is repair season in Southern California. The good news is that most of these awnings don’t need to be replaced. A quality frame is the expensive part of the system, and if the frame is straight, a repair or reskin brings the whole thing back to life for a fraction of the cost of starting over.
A reskin is exactly what it sounds like: we strip your tired, faded, or torn cover and fit the existing frame with brand-new premium fabric, solution-dyed acrylic in hundreds of colors and patterns, the same grade we put on our new installations. The awning you’ve had for a decade comes back looking new, with fabric engineered to stand up to years more inland sun. For most homeowners, it’s the highest-value repair in the business.
Motorized awnings have their own failure modes, and we fix them all: dead or sluggish motors, lost limit settings, dead remotes, and sensors that stopped sensing. Running an older system without smart controls? See our Somfy automation options. We also upgrade manual awnings to motorization, a quiet Somfy motor that turns your crank into a button press, with an optional wind sensor that retracts the awning automatically when the Santa Anas kick up. If you’ve been leaving your manual awning closed because the crank is a hassle, this is the fix.
Then there’s the structure: bent lateral arms, seized elbows, failing wall brackets, cracked cassette end caps. Hardware wears and wind punishes, we replace worn components, re-tension the frame, and check the mounting so the awning opens square and folds flush. And when an awning is simply a few years old and feels tired, our cleaning and tune-up service covers the deep clean, lubrication, and operational check that bring the smoothness back.
Here’s what the estimate visit looks like. We come out for free, look at the whole system, fabric, frame, arms, hardware, motor, and tell you the repair number and the replacement number side by side, in writing. Then we recommend whichever one we’d pick if it were our patio. No sales routine, no invented urgency: most of our repair work comes from referrals, and referrals only happen when the advice is straight. Second opinions are always free, if someone else’s quote is fair, we’ll say so.
A word about older systems: if your awning’s manufacturer is gone and parts are genuinely unobtainable, we’ll tell you that at the estimate instead of billing you for a diagnosis that goes nowhere. Some orphan systems can be adapted with modern components, we’ve saved plenty, but when they can’t, you deserve the replacement conversation up front, not after we’ve spent your money.
Between service visits, the best maintenance is boring: rinse the fabric now and then, keep leaves and debris off the cover, and, this is the big one, retract before wind season does it for you. Most of the October damage calls we get are awnings that rode out one Santa Ana too many fully extended. A little caution in the fall adds years to the fabric’s life.
We repair awnings we didn’t install, all the major brands, manual and motorized. During your free repair estimate, we’ll diagnose the problem, quote the fix in writing, and give you the honest repair-vs.-replace math. If parts are available and the frame is sound, we’ll fix it. If you’d be paying to rebuild the whole system anyway, we’ll say so, and point you at our retractable awnings, which are custom-built, Somfy-motorized, and backed by our 15-year warranty. Honest judgment, either way, that’s the job.
What we fix
Four ways we bring awnings back
Fabric Replacement (Reskin)
Torn, faded, or mildew-spotted fabric is the #1 reason awnings get retired early. We strip the old cover and re-skin your existing frame with premium solution-dyed acrylic, hundreds of colors and patterns, engineered to hold up in brutal UV.
Motor Repair & Upgrades
Sluggish, noisy, or dead motor? We diagnose and repair motorized awnings, and we can upgrade a crank-operated awning to quiet Somfy motorization, or add a wind sensor so it protects itself during Santa Ana events.
Frame & Hardware Repair
Bent arms, seized hinges, failing brackets, cracked end caps. We replace worn hardware and re-tension the frame so the awning opens and closes square and smooth, the way it did when it was new.
Cleaning & Tune-Ups
A professional clean, re-tension, lubrication of moving parts, and a full operational check. If your awning is a few years old and just feels tired, a tune-up is often all it needs.
When to call
Signs your awning needs attention
Catch it early and the fix is usually simple. Wait, and simple becomes expensive.
Tears, sagging, or fading fabric
Sun and wind thin the fabric over time. If the cover is ripping at the seams or the color has washed out, the frame underneath is probably still fine, a reskin is likely the answer.
The motor struggles or quit
Awning stops halfway, makes grinding noises, or ignores the remote. Often it's the motor or its limits, fixable without touching the fabric or frame.
It doesn't open or close evenly
One side leads, it bunches at the cassette, or the arms don't fold flush. That's worn hardware, loose brackets, or lost tension, a technician's repair, not a replacement.
Storm or wind damage
Santa Ana gusts bend arms and tear fabric fast. If the damage happened in one event, get it looked at quickly, early repairs are almost always cheaper than the water and structural damage that follows.
It just looks and feels old
A stained, chalky cover and creaking operation make the whole patio feel neglected. A reskin plus tune-up can make a ten-year-old awning look new again.
You crank it less than you used to
Manual awnings get abandoned when the crank gets stiff. Motorization breathes new life into them, press a button instead of wrestling a handle.
Straight talk
Repair or replace? Here's how we think about it.
Repair wins when the bones are good: straight frame, sound arms, working hardware. Fabric, motors, remotes, and sensors are all replaceable parts, swapping them is far cheaper than a new system, and the result looks and works like new. Most awnings under fifteen years old with a straight frame fall in this camp.
Replace wins when you’d be rebuilding the whole awning anyway: bent frame plus dead motor plus shot fabric means the repair quote starts approaching replacement cost, and a new system gets you current hardware, a quiet Somfy motor, wind sensing, and our 15-year warranty, which no repair can offer. If that’s where the math lands, we’ll show you the numbers and walk you through our retractable awnings.
The gray area is motorization. If your manual awning’s frame and fabric are fine but you never use it because the crank is a chore, a motor upgrade can be the best money you spend on the patio. Read our guide on motorizing an existing manual awning to see what’s involved.
