Here’s what separates a shade you love from a shade you forget you own: the one you love operates itself. Every retractable awning and motorized screen we install is Somfy-powered, quiet, reliable motors and controls from the company that defined the category, and with the right sensors and a TaHoma hub, your patio starts managing itself.

The TaHoma hub is the centerpiece: it connects your awnings and screens to your phone, so you can run the whole patio from anywhere. But the real magic is the sun and wind sensors. The sun sensor watches the light and extends your awning or drops your screens before the heat builds; the wind sensor watches the gusts and retracts the awning on its own when the Santa Anas show up. No sprinting outside mid-gust, no watching the weather app, the system protects itself.

Then there are schedules and scenes. Want the west-facing screens down at 4 PM every day when the glare hits? Want the awning out for Saturday lunch and everything retracted at sunset? Set it once and forget it, or trigger a whole scene with one tap: movie night, pool party, away-from-home. And because Somfy plays well with the major smart-home platforms, voice control works too.

Automation isn’t just for new installs, either. Many existing awnings can be upgraded to Somfy motorization, we do these upgrades regularly, and we’ll tell you at the estimate exactly what your frame supports. Whether it’s going on a new retractable awning, a motorized screen, or the patio cover lighting we’ve wired for automation, we configure every remote, scene, and sensor before we leave, and show you how it all works. One underrated use case: California rooms and covered patios with open sides, where motorized screens become the walls. With Somfy controls, one tap drops the screens against the afternoon sun, another raises them when the breeze is perfect, and a schedule does it for you daily. It turns a three-season patio into a year-round room, and the screens retract out of sight when you want the openness back.

You don’t have to automate everything on day one. A lot of our customers start with the motor, the button press, the smooth operation, and add the TaHoma hub and sensors later, when they’re ready. Somfy systems are built to grow: the motor we install today accepts the wind sensor you add next fall and the hub you add after that. We’d rather build it right in stages than have you wait another year for the patio you want now.

Install day is when it all comes together. We mount and wire everything, pair the sensors, set up the TaHoma hub, build your schedules and scenes, and then walk you through it on your own phone before we leave. You’ll retract the awning from the app, override the sensors, and run a scene yourself, so the first time you use it alone, it’s old hat. And if anything ever behaves oddly, you call the crew that installed it, not a help line in another time zone.

The awnings and screens we automate are covered by our 15-year warranty, and automation upgrades qualify for the same financing as everything else we do, flexible financing options for qualified buyers. Your estimate is free, on site, and in writing.

What's possible

A patio that runs itself

The Somfy components we install, configure, and support.

TaHoma Hub & Phone Control

The TaHoma hub puts every Somfy-powered shade on your phone. Open, close, or stop any awning or screen from anywhere, the couch, the office, or the road.

Sun Sensor

The sensor watches the light and extends your awning or drops your screens automatically when the sun hits. Shade arrives before the heat does.

Wind Sensor

When gusts build, the sensor retracts your awning on its own, no sprinting outside during a Santa Ana event. It's the single most valuable upgrade we offer.

Schedules & Scenes

Set it once: awning out at noon, screens down for the 5 PM glare, everything retracted at sunset. One tap runs a whole scene, "movie night," "pool party," "away from home."

Voice & Smart-Home Control

Somfy motors integrate with the major smart-home platforms, so "close the patio shade" just works. During your estimate we'll walk through what your setup supports.

Quiet, Reliable Motors

Somfy motors are whisper-quiet and built to cycle thousands of times without drama. They can also be operated manually if the power goes out, you're never stuck.

FAQ

Somfy questions, answered straight

What does the TaHoma hub actually do?
TaHoma is the brain: a small hub that connects your Somfy-powered awnings and screens to your phone and your Wi-Fi. Once it's set up, you can control every shade from the app, run schedules, trigger scenes, and pair sun and wind sensors, all in one place instead of juggling remotes.
Will Somfy work with my existing smart home setup?
In most cases, yes. Somfy integrates with the major smart-home platforms and voice assistants, so your shades can run alongside your lights, locks, and thermostats. Tell us what you're running during your free estimate and we'll map out exactly what's compatible before you spend a dollar.
Can you add automation to an awning or screen I already own?
Often, yes, many existing awnings can be upgraded to Somfy motorization, and sensors can usually be added to systems we install. Compatibility depends on the frame and the existing hardware, so we look at it in person and give you a straight answer at the estimate.
How do the sun and wind sensors work?
The sun sensor monitors light levels and extends your awning or drops your screens when the sun gets strong, so the shade is there before the room heats up. The wind sensor monitors gusts and retracts the awning automatically when they build, protecting it while you're not watching. You can override either one from the app at any time.
What happens to my shades if the Wi-Fi or power goes down?
They stay exactly where they are, nothing drifts or moves on its own. Without power the motors hold position, and every system we install can be operated manually until things are back. The schedules and scenes pick up automatically once connectivity returns.
Why premium?
“Automation is the difference between a shade you own and a shade you use.”
  • Set it once, schedules run the patio daily. No remotes to hunt, no remembering to close at 4 PM
  • Sensors that protect, the sun extends, the wind retracts, whether you're home or in another time zone
  • Grows with you, today's motor accepts tomorrow's hub and next season's sensors
  • Everything paired, programmed, and tested on your own phone before we leave
  • 15-year warranty on awnings and screens, coverage varies by product and component
  • One crew for everything, you call the people who installed it, not a help line
The cheap alternative
  • Remotes scattered around the house with dead batteries
  • “Smart” shade you still babysit by hand every windy afternoon
  • Sensors that never arrive because nothing was planned for them
  • Add-ons that won't talk to the motor you already paid for
  • A help line in another time zone when anything behaves oddly
