Who this program is built for

The dealer program is for working contractors and outdoor-living businesses: remodelers, deck builders, pool contractors, general contractors, and specialty retailers who already own customer relationships and already run crews. If your customers ask how to shade a patio, a pergola, or a sun-blasted window wall — and you currently have nothing premium to offer them — you are who we built this for.

You do not need to be an awning company, and you do not need prior shade experience. You need a real business, a real service area, and pride in finished work. The training covers the products; your business covers everything else.

How the partnership works, in brief

You buy manufacturer-direct and wholesale — no importer, distributor, or rep layers. You sell and install the line in your agreed territory: motorized power screens and retractable awnings (full-cassette and open-roll), plus wind sensors, LED lighting, smart-home controls, and the fabric library. Patio covers are not part of the dealer lineup.

We train your crew, support your jobs with real technical help, prioritize your parts and warranty claims, and route consumer inquiries from your territory to you. Dealers sell AJ Shades products nationwide — product-only and wholesale, fulfilled by trusted local contractors. AJ Shades itself installs only in Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties); we never promise installation outside that footprint, and we never ask our dealers to name contractors on our behalf.

Applying: what we look for in a partner

The application is a conversation, not an exam. When we review an inquiry, we are asking three questions: is this a real operating business with real customers, does the service area have room for a premium shade line, and does the crew take pride in finished work. Everything else — product knowledge, measuring standards, automation fluency — is what training is for.

The strongest applications tell us specifics: the trades you work in, the markets you serve, the kind of projects you run, and why shade fits your next chapter. A deck builder who keeps hearing “how do we shade this?” from clients is a better fit than a generalist who wants another line on a website. We would rather hear the real story than a polished one.

What disqualifies an applicant is rare but worth naming: no real business behind the inquiry, a service area with an existing partner and no adjacent room, or an approach to customers that does not match ours — pressure tactics, bait pricing, or disappearing after the check clears. The network's reputation is shared, so we protect it at the door. Honest operators need not worry; this bar is exactly where you already stand.

Dealer questions, answered

What kinds of businesses become AJ Shades dealers?
Remodelers, deck builders, pool contractors, general contractors, and outdoor-living retailers — any established business whose customers ask about shade and whose crew can measure, mount, and wire. What matters is the customer relationship you already own.
I have never sold shade products before. Is that a problem?
No. Most of our strongest dealers had never sold a retractable awning or a motorized screen before joining. Training is built for working crews: the two product families, the automation options, measuring standards, and the troubleshooting calls that come up most in the first season.
How does territory work?
We discuss it openly during your application — your market, nearby open markets, and where demand is heading — and we agree on a territory with room to build on. We recruit deliberately and do not stack dealers on the same zip code. Strong performers get first consideration when adjacent markets open.
What is my upfront investment?
There is no franchise fee and no inventory warehouse required. Dealers launch with samples, fabric swatches, and showroom display material, then order per project. The investment is your crew's training time and a working display — the highest-converting sales tool in the program.
How do wholesale orders actually flow?
You measure the job to our standards, submit the specification, and we review it — closely on your early orders. Then we custom-build to your measurements, quality-check, and ship to your shop or the job site. Lead times are communicated per order, honestly.
What if a measurement is wrong or a part fails?
Dealer support is people who have installed the product themselves: text (909) 325-3110 or email dealer@ajshadesinc.com, send photos, and get a resolution plan. Parts and warranty claims go to the front of the line, because your reputation with that customer is ours too. Register every installation at /dealer/warranty-registration so the 15-year coverage is on file under your company name before you ever need it.
Can I sell the products online or outside my territory?
Your agreed territory is where you build your business. Project-specific exceptions are handled conversation by conversation — talk to the dealer team before quoting outside your market so we keep every partner's territory clean.
Do you offer the products to homeowners directly?
AJ Shades sells and installs directly only in Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties). Everywhere else, homeowners buy through dealers and trusted local contractors — which is why your territory is protected rather than competed with.
What marketing help do I get?
Professional photography of real installations, showroom display guidance, fabric samples, co-branded quote templates — and inbound consumer inquiries from your territory routed to you. Practical tools, not theoretical brand decks.
How do I apply, and how fast do you respond?
Use the dealer inquiry form and tell us about your business, your trade, and your service area. We review every inquiry personally — expect a real human response, a territory conversation with qualified applicants, and a straight answer either way.
Can I sell AJ Shades products online, or is this an in-person business?
Shade is a consultative sale, and the dealers who win treat it that way. Homeowners buy retractable awnings and motorized screens after seeing the fabric, feeling the hardware, and watching a unit deploy — which is why a working display, even a single awning on your own building or a demo unit at a home show, outsells any website. That said, your online presence does the prospecting: local search, project photos, and reviews bring the inquiries, and the in-person visit closes them. AJ Shades supplies co-branded marketing assets and product photography for your site and social channels, so your digital front door looks national while your handshake stays local. The model is simple — the internet finds the customer, you earn them.
What does a typical dealer’s first 90 days look like?
Inquiry and territory conversation in week one, training scheduled within the first month, sample kit and marketing materials in hand, and the first quotes going out as soon as you have a working display to demonstrate. Most dealers close their first system within 60 to 90 days — usually to an existing customer or a referral, not a cold lead. The dealers who move fastest are the ones who announce the new line to their current base on day one instead of waiting until everything feels perfect. Momentum beats perfection in the launch phase.
How do I handle customers who want patio covers or pergolas?
Honestly and helpfully. Our dealer line is retractable awnings and motorized power screens — premium, engineered, and backed by a 15-year warranty. We do not offer patio covers or pergolas through the dealer program, and we train you to say so plainly: the retractable line solves the shade problem most of those customers actually have, with more flexibility and real warranty backing. If a customer truly needs a fixed structure, refer them to a local builder and keep the relationship — the screen and awning sale often follows anyway.
What separates the dealers who thrive from the ones who stall?
Three things, in order: they demonstrate live instead of describing, they follow up the quote within 48 hours, and they ask every happy customer for the referral and the review. The product is premium and the warranty story is strong, but shade is still a considered purchase — the dealer who shows the system moving, answers the wind question honestly, and stays in touch wins the jobs. We coach all three in training and in the ongoing dealer support. The stall pattern is always the same: quoting from a brochure and waiting for the phone to ring.
How is AJ Shades different from the other shade lines I could carry?
Three things: the warranty, the factory, and the focus. The 15-year warranty on every retractable awning and motorized power screen is factory-backed through AJ Shades — not a paper promise from a distant importer. The products are American-made on consistent platforms, so parts and service exist for the long haul. And we are a shade company, not a catalog of everything — retractable awnings and motorized screens are what we engineer, build, and support, which means the training and the backup go deep instead of wide.
Do I get protected territory?
Territories are structured so dealers are not tripping over each other — the specifics depend on your market and are part of the territory conversation after you apply. What we will not do is stack dealers on top of dealers and let you fight over the same zip codes. A dealer who invests in training, a working display, and local marketing deserves to harvest that market, and the program is built around that principle.
What does the ongoing relationship look like after launch?
Like a partnership with a factory that answers the phone. You get continued access to our team for specification questions, measuring help on tricky jobs, and warranty support — plus product updates as the line evolves. Dealers also get refreshed marketing materials and co-branded assets as they are released. The dealers who use the support line regularly are the ones who grow fastest, because every hard job becomes a learning rep instead of a lost weekend.
