Step one: measure to the standard

Every order starts with your crew's measurements, taken to the standard you learn in dealer training. Openings are measured the way the factory needs them, not the way a tape measure happens to land, because a custom-built unit is only as good as the numbers it is built from.

Training covers the measuring standards for both product families: motorized power screens (openings, mounting surfaces, power routing) and retractable awnings (width, projection, pitch, mounting structure). Get the numbers right and everything downstream is smooth; that is why we invest the training time up front.

Step two: submit the specification for review

You submit the job specification, measurements, product configuration, fabric selection, and options like wind sensors, LED lighting, or smart-home controls. On your early orders, our team reviews every specification line by line with you before anything builds.

This review step is where expensive mistakes die quietly. A mounting surface that needs reinforcement, a projection that wants a different pitch, a screen that should be split into two units for reliability, we catch it here, on paper, instead of on the job site. As your order history grows, the review gets faster because your specs get cleaner.

Step three: custom build and quality check

Approved specifications go to the build floor, where each unit is custom-built to your measurements, frames, motors, fabrics, and options assembled for that specific job. No stock units, no close-enough sizes. American-made, by the same manufacturer that trained your crew.

Every unit passes a quality check before it ships: operation, finish, and configuration verified against your specification. We would rather catch an issue on our floor than on your customer's patio, because your reputation is on the line, and so is ours.

Step four: delivery, installation, and support

Units ship to your shop or directly to the job site, per your preference, with lead times communicated honestly per order. Your crew installs to the trained standard, clean work, honest quoting, and a final walkthrough that leaves the customer confident.

After the install, the support structure stays in place: priority replacement parts, dealer-first warranty processing on the 15-year coverage (awnings and motorized power screens), and technical help from people who have installed the product themselves. A service call on a five-year-old installation gets the same urgency as a new order.

The pipeline is designed to disappear into your routine: measure, submit, receive, install, repeat, with the manufacturer behind you at every step. No mystery, no black box, just a defined sequence from your tape measure to their patio, backed by the company that built the product. Dealers sell AJ Shades products nationwide, product-only and wholesale, fulfilled by trusted local contractors. AJ Shades itself installs only in Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties); we never promise installation outside that footprint, and we never ask our dealers to name contractors on our behalf.

The paperwork: quotes, confirmations, and records

Every order generates a paper trail that protects both sides: your specification submission, our review notes, the build confirmation with the final configuration, and the shipment record. Nothing is verbal-only. When a question comes up six months later, what fabric was that, which motor option, what did we agree on the projection, the answer is in the record, not in someone's memory.

For your customers, the paperwork is a selling tool. The co-branded quote templates show the product configuration, the fabric selection, the options, and the 15-year warranty in writing, which is exactly what a premium buyer wants to see before signing. A detailed, professional quote closes better than a number on a napkin, and it sets the expectation that the installation will be equally professional.

Keep your own job files with the same discipline: measurements, photos of the mounting surfaces, the customer's selections, and the final walkthrough notes. The dealers who run the cleanest paperwork also run the fewest callbacks, not a coincidence. When a service question arises years later, the dealer with the file answers it in one call; the dealer without it schedules a site visit.

Dealer questions, answered

How long does an order take?
Lead times are communicated honestly per order and depend on the specification and current build schedule. We would rather give you a real date than a fast one, your install schedule depends on it.
What if I discover a measurement error after submitting?
Tell us immediately, that is what the specification review is for. On early orders we review line by line precisely to catch these. If a unit is already in build, we will work the options with you honestly.
Can units ship directly to the job site?
Yes, to your shop or directly to the job site, per your preference. Site-direct delivery saves you a handling step on larger projects. Just include the delivery address and site contact when you submit the specification.
How do warranty claims work on installed units?
Through the dealer team with priority parts access: text (909) 325-3110 or email dealer@ajshadesinc.com. The 15-year coverage applies to retractable awnings and motorized power screens (frames, hardware, motors, fabric systems).
Do you offer rush builds?
Talk to the dealer team about your timeline before you promise the customer a date. We will tell you honestly what is possible, and we will never silently cut a quality check to hit a date.
How do I start ordering?
First become a dealer: send the inquiry, complete the territory conversation and training, and your ordering access opens with your first supported project.
What if my measurements change after I submit the order?
Contact the dealer team immediately. If the unit has not entered production we can usually revise the order, and if it has, we will walk you through the most cost-effective path forward rather than leaving you to absorb the mistake.
Can I get help with a tricky measurement before ordering?
Yes, and you should ask before the order, not after. Send photos, the rough dimensions, and a description of what makes the mount unusual: odd angles, limited structure, obstructions, or multi-panel spans. The dealer team reviews it with you, and for genuinely complex situations we can walk the site by video call. Getting the measurement right upstream is the entire game in custom shade, a verified measurement becomes a unit that installs in hours, while a guessed one becomes a problem. This support is part of the dealer relationship, not a billable extra: we would rather spend twenty minutes on your measurement now than rebuild a unit later. When in doubt, ask. It is what the factory side is for.
What information do you need from me to build an order?
Accurate measurements, clear photos of the mounting area, and the product configuration: model, size, fabric, motor and control choices, and any options like wind sensors or lighting. Our ordering worksheet walks you through it, and our team reviews every order for buildability before it enters production, if a measurement looks off or a configuration will not work on the structure shown, we flag it before anything is built, not after. That review step is where costly mistakes get caught.
Can I modify or cancel an order after submitting?
Before production starts, yes, changes are straightforward. Once the system is in build, modifications may not be possible, which is why the pre-production review matters. If your job timeline shifts, tell us immediately: we can often hold or resequence a build, but we cannot un-build one. The rule is simple, communicate early and we will bend; communicate late and physics wins.
What are the most common mistakes on first orders?
Three, and our review catches all of them: measurements taken to the trim instead of the structural opening, motor side specified backwards for the actual wiring run, and fabric chosen from a screen instead of a physical sample. None of them are embarrassing, every dealer makes them once. The review step exists precisely so ‘once’ does not become a pattern, and after two or three orders the process feels routine.
How far ahead should I plan a job around production?
Build the lead time into your customer promise from day one. Custom manufacturing is not off-the-shelf: measure, review, build, quality-check, and ship each take their slice. Tell your customer a realistic date with margin in it, and you look like a hero when the system arrives early. Promise the optimistic date, and a normal production week becomes your problem. Experienced dealers quote the lead time as a feature, ‘built for your home, not pulled from a warehouse’, and customers respect it.
