The South Central shade opportunity
The South Central region is where weather is not a talking point, it is the headline, daily, from March through October. Texas summers are a genuine engineering problem: triple-digit heat, brutal western exposures, and unshaded glass that turns homes into ovens and utility bills into arguments. In this market, shade is not decoration. It is infrastructure, and buyers pay infrastructure money for the answer that actually works.
Then the storms arrive. Hail alley runs straight through Dallas-Fort Worth and across Oklahoma; tornado season sweeps the whole region; Gulf systems push into Louisiana and Arkansas. Every homeowner here has a story about what the weather did to something expensive and stationary, which is precisely why retractable wins. What rolls away cannot be torn away. The wind-sensor demonstration, gust front hits, awning folds itself home, closes deals in this region like nowhere else.
And the outdoor-living culture is enormous. Texas builds some of the biggest residential outdoor spaces in America: covered patios, outdoor kitchens, pool decks, entire backyard compounds. The contractors building them, deck builders, pool companies, outdoor-living retailers, are the ideal dealer candidates, already standing on the property with the customer’s trust. The product slot in their portfolio is sitting empty.
Four states, four plays
How South Central breaks down
Texas: four metros, four markets. Dallas-Fort Worth is the flagship, hail alley, enormous new-build suburbs, and the highest shade ticket sizes in the region. Houston brings humidity, hurricanes, and the pool-capital culture. Austin’s growth corridor and San Antonio’s established neighborhoods round out a state that alone could support a dozen dealer territories. No single market in the South Central region should be under one roof.
Oklahoma: tornado alley, zero premium coverage. Oklahoma City and Tulsa sit in the most storm-tested housing market in America, buyers here think about weather the way other markets think about square footage. The retractable pitch lands instantly, the premium competition is essentially nonexistent, and the first mover writes the category. This is greenfield with a tailwind.
Arkansas and Louisiana. Northwest Arkansas’ corporate-driven growth (Fayetteville, Bentonville, Rogers) brings transplant buyers with premium tastes and zero local premium options. Little Rock and Baton Rouge offer steady retrofit volume. New Orleans’ courtyard culture is a natural fit for retractable systems in tight historic spaces, and the Gulf storm conversation makes the wind-sensor story land hard. Three of the four states are effectively uncontested.
What South Central dealers sell
Retractable Awnings
The storm-alley flagship: American-made retractable awnings that shade Texas-sized patios through the brutal months and retract, by hand, app, or wind sensor, before hail, gusts, and tornado-season winds arrive.
See the dealer lineup →Motorized Power Screens
The heat-and-energy answer: zip-track screens that cut solar heat on west-facing glass before it ever reaches the interior, comfort you can feel and utility savings you can measure. In Texas summers, this is the product that sells itself.
Explore power screens →Automation & Options
The storm-country multiplier: wind sensors that retract before gust fronts, sun sensors for western exposures, and smart-home integration. In a region where the weather changes hourly, automation is the difference between a product and a system.
