Maine compresses an entire year of outdoor living into about twelve weeks, and Mainers treat those weeks like a religion. The deck, the porch, the camp on the lake, from late June through Labor Day, it's all anyone talks about. But Maine summer has teeth: black flies and mosquitoes that own the evenings, low-angle sun that turns a west-facing deck into a squinting contest, and sudden coastal weather that sends everyone scrambling. Motorized power screens erase the bug problem at the touch of a button. Retractable awnings command the sun. Together they turn a fair-weather deck into an all-hours outdoor room, and in a state where the season is this short, every usable hour has real value.

AJ Shades is a veteran-owned American manufacturer headquartered in Southern California, building a nationwide network of independent dealers for our Quality Improvement Products line, motorized power screens, open-roll retractable awnings, and full-cassette awnings. Plainly stated: AJ Shades' own installation crews serve only Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties). As a Maine dealer, you sell and install our products in your own market; we supply them wholesale, train you on the full line, and back every awning and screen with our 15-year factory warranty.

The Maine buyer is a premium buyer hiding in flannel. Second homes and camps from Kennebunk to Mount Desert Island represent serious discretionary spending, and the contractors who serve that market, coastal builders, lake-region remodelers, deck companies, are already trusted advisors to exactly the households that buy premium shade. Dealers buy manufacturer-direct at wholesale and keep the retail margin, with no distributor layers. In a market with virtually no premium shade competition, the dealer who shows up first with a working display and real product knowledge owns the category.

One thing to understand up front: our own install teams work exclusively in Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties). Your dealership covers your market, you sell, you install, you keep the customer relationship. We supply the products wholesale and back them with the factory warranty.

Maine's contractor economy runs on reputation and referrals, which cuts both ways: a dealer who installs cleanly and services promptly gets recommended up and down the coast, while sloppy work travels just as fast. The 15-year factory warranty is your trust accelerator here, it lets a new dealer borrow AJ Shades' credibility from day one.

Maine dealers, this is your market

Why Maine is ready for premium shade

Coastal and lake-region builders

From the southern Maine coast to the Belgrade Lakes, second-home owners spend freely on the outdoor experience. Shade and screens are the natural upsell on every deck, porch, and camp renovation.

Deck and porch contractors

Maine's housing stock loves its porches, and motorized screens are the modern answer to the screened porch, without the permanent enclosure. One product, two markets: new builds and retrofits.

Vacation-rental managers

A screened, shaded deck is a listing photo that books. Managers from Old Orchard Beach to Bar Harbor buy for multiple properties when the ROI is obvious.

Portland and the southern coast are the volume core, Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Kennebunk, with Bangor and the central region, the midcoast (Camden, Rockland, Boothbay), and the Bar Harbor/Acadia corridor as strong secondary markets. Apply and we'll confirm territory availability.

Maine dealer FAQ

Questions Maine businesses ask us

Is the season too short to support shade products?
The short season is the selling point. When you only get twelve weeks, every evening lost to bugs or glare is a week of the year you don't get back. Mainers spend heavily to maximize the season, that's why the deck, the boat, and the camp all get premium treatment. Shade products fit that psychology perfectly.
Do motorized screens really solve the bug problem?
They're the best answer short of staying inside. A screen that drops at dusk seals the porch or deck against black flies and mosquitoes, then retracts out of sight during the day. For lake and coastal properties, it's the single most appreciated upgrade we sell.
What happens to the products in winter?
Both product lines are designed to retract into protective housings, the full-cassette awning seals the fabric completely, and motorized screens roll up into their cassette. Nothing sits exposed to ice, snow load, or nor'easters. The 15-year warranty covers normal residential use.
I'm a builder, not a retailer. Can I be a dealer?
Most of our dealers are builders and contractors, not stores. You need to measure, sell, and install, dealer training covers the product line, controls, and positioning. A working display on your own home or a current job site does the selling for you.
How does wholesale pricing work?
Approved dealers order from the wholesale catalog at dealer pricing, which isn't published on the website. You set your own retail pricing for the Maine market. The margin structure supports a real business on realistic seasonal volume.
Which parts of Maine are you recruiting in?
Statewide, with priority on the Portland metro and southern coast, the midcoast, and the Bangor region. Territory is discussed during the application, we recruit deliberately, not densely.
Do Maine dealers sell through the winter?
The smart ones sell hardest in winter. Summer is the install season, Portland, Bar Harbor, the lake regions, when every second-home owner wants the deck finished by July. Winter is the selling season: quotes written in February become April installs, and the offseason is when you line up the builders and remodelers for spring. Retractable products are the honest Maine specification because they disappear for snow season, no covers, no storage, no spring repairs. One crew can cover the southern half of the state from a single base.
