A premium shade product installed badly is a bad product — the customer cannot tell the difference, and the review names the brand on the valance, not the crew that mounted it. That is the entire reason the AJ Shades dealer program certifies installers instead of just shipping boxes. When a homeowner in your market buys a retractable awning or a motorized power screen from a certified AJ Shades dealer, the factory stands behind the crew that shows up, not just the product in the crate. Training is what makes that promise true.

The certification exists for a practical reason too: it is the fastest way we know to turn a good installer into a profitable shade dealer. Measuring a patio for sun exposure, specifying the right profile for the wind load, commissioning a Somfy motor so the limits are perfect on the first try — these are learnable skills, and the program teaches them in the order you will use them. Dealers who complete certification quote faster, install cleaner, and get fewer callbacks than dealers who try to figure it out from a manual. The training pays for itself in the first season.

None of this is classroom theory. Every module is built around real jobs: your crew measures real patios, specifies real orders, and installs real product while our technical team reviews the work. By the time the certificate is issued, your lead installer has already done the job — supervised, corrected, and signed off. That is what the certification means, and it is why customers trust it.

The curriculum

What certification covers

Measuring and site survey

The foundation everything else stands on. Your crew learns the factory survey method: reading the sun path across the patio through the seasons, identifying the wind exposure that decides between open-roll and full-cassette profiles, checking mounting structure for what it can actually carry, and documenting the site so the engineering review back at the factory sees what you saw. Bad measurements are the most expensive mistake in this business — this module exists to make them rare.

Product specification

The full dealer lineup, taught as decision-making rather than a catalog walk: retractable awnings in open-roll and full-cassette profiles, motorized power screens for wind and insect control, and the option stack — LED lighting, wind sensors, Somfy controls, smart-home integration, and the fabric library. Your crew learns which product solves which problem, when to step a customer up to the cassette, and when a screen is the right answer instead of an awning. Patio covers are not in the dealer lineup, so the specification stays focused on the products that carry the program.

Installation

Mounting to structure, and doing it clean. Bracket placement and structural verification, pitch setting for water runoff, cassette alignment so the fabric tracks true for years, screen track and housing installation with storm-rail detailing where the exposure demands it. The module covers the mistakes that generate callbacks — rushed flashing, optimistic anchors, fabric loaded under tension wrong — and the inspection checklist that catches them before the crew leaves the driveway.

Electrical and automation

Everything your crew touches on the low-voltage and control side: what to specify for the licensed electrician, outlet and circuit placement relative to the motor head, and then the commissioning work that is yours — setting motor limits, pairing remotes, calibrating wind sensors, integrating with the customer’s smart home. A motorized system that is commissioned sloppily feels broken even when the hardware is perfect; this module makes crisp commissioning the habit.

Service and warranty

The module that protects your reputation after the sale. Field triage for the calls that come up most — remotes that lost pairing, sensors that need recalibration, fabric that needs re-tensioning after its first season — plus the warranty claim process for the 15-year coverage on retractable awnings and motorized power screens: what you fix in the field, what gets a parts shipment, and what comes back to us. A dealer who services confidently keeps the customer for the next project and the referral after that.

How it is delivered

Training that fits a working crew

The core modules run as live remote sessions scheduled around your jobs, not the other way around — evenings and weather days, with your crew’s actual upcoming projects as the coursework. There is no more effective way to learn specification than to specify the job you are installing next week, with a factory specialist reviewing your survey line by line. The video library backs it up: every procedure filmed step by step, searchable from the job site, so nobody has to remember everything from the session.

Factory hands-on sessions run periodically for crews that want time on the product before their first install — mounting practice, motor commissioning drills, and the service procedures practiced until they are muscle memory. And none of it ends at certification. The technical support line stays open for the life of the partnership, the video library keeps growing with new procedures, and the engineering review on every order means a factory specialist looks at your specification before it enters production. You are never installing alone.

Crew turnover does not reset you to zero either. Certification is per crew lead, and the re-certification path for a new hire is the same program at the same pace — no penalties, no waiting lists. Dealers who grow from one crew to three certify each new lead the same way, and the quality stays consistent because the standard never moves.

The model

Local dealer, national backing

Training is one pillar of the partnership; the business model is the other. You sell and install in your market, buying wholesale from the manufacturer-direct catalog; we supply the products, the training, the engineering review on every order, and the 15-year warranty on retractable awnings and motorized power screens. AJ Shades’ own installation crews serve only Southern California — San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties — and we never compete with our dealers. Inquiries from your territory are routed to you, not around you.

The lineup stays focused deliberately: retractable awnings in open-roll and full-cassette profiles plus motorized power screens — the Quality Improvement Products line. That focus is what makes the training deep instead of broad, and it is what makes your crew the undisputed local expert in premium retractable shade rather than a generalist who dabbles. Customers can feel the difference between the two, and they pay for it.

If you run an installation crew and want the shade category to become your most profitable line, start with the dealer inquiry and tell us about your business. The territory conversation includes your market, your crew, and your launch plan — and the training starts with your first real project, not a classroom.

Training questions, answered

Do I need prior awning experience to become an AJ Shades dealer?
No. The certification program was built for experienced installers coming from adjacent trades — general contracting, patio and deck work, window and door installation, outdoor living. If your crew can measure accurately, mount to structure, and finish clean, we teach the shade-specific part: reading a patio for sun and wind, specifying open-roll versus full-cassette profiles, and commissioning motorized systems. Dealers with zero installation background partner with an installer and complete the sales and specification modules instead of the hands-on ones.
Who handles the electrical work for motorized awnings and screens?
A licensed electrician, per your local code — that part is never improvised. Training covers exactly what to specify and how to coordinate: outlet placement relative to the motor head, circuit requirements for Somfy-driven systems, and the hand-off checklist between your crew and the electrician. Most dealers build a standing relationship with one local electrician who learns the pattern after the first two jobs. The motor and control commissioning itself — limits, remotes, sensors, smart-home pairing — is your crew’s work, and training drills it until it is routine.
Is certification required before I can place my first order?
The core modules are: measuring and site survey, product specification, and installation fundamentals. You complete them before your first order ships, because the engineering review on every order assumes a certified crew on the receiving end. The advanced modules — commercial specification, service and warranty, the sales framework — can run in parallel with your first projects. Certification is per crew lead, not per company, so growing dealers certify each new lead as they hire.
What does the commercial specification module add?
Everything that makes commercial different: heavier specification for larger projections and wider screen spans, wind sensors as standard equipment, LED lighting designed for evening service, mounts engineered for exposure, and the documentation package — engineered drawings, product specs, warranty paperwork — that lets a general manager or a plan-checker say yes. It also teaches the commercial sales conversation: walking the patio, reading the buyer’s business in covers and seasons, and quoting so the owner sees an investment. Dealers who complete it can pursue the commercial lane described in our commercial dealer program.
How is training delivered if my business is not in California?
The program was designed for a national dealer network, so distance is assumed. Core modules run as live remote sessions with your crew’s actual first projects as the coursework — you measure a real patio, we review the survey together. The video library covers every procedure step by step for reference on the job. Factory hands-on sessions run periodically for crews who want time on the product before their first install. And your first projects get direct support from our technical team regardless of where you are.
What happens when my crew turns over?
You re-certify the new lead the same way you certified the first one: core modules remote, video library for the procedures, and direct support on their first projects. There is no re-certification fee treadmill and no penalty for growth — the program expects dealers to scale crews. The certification stays with the individual crew lead, so a lead who leaves takes their credential and your next hire starts the same path.
Do you review my first installations?
Yes — closely. Your first projects get direct support from our team: we review the site survey and specification before the order enters production, we are available during the install, and we walk the finished job with you against the certification checklist. That intensity tapers as your crew demonstrates the pattern, but the engineering review on every order never goes away. It is the cheapest quality control in the industry: a second set of factory eyes on every job before it ships.
How do warranty claims work for my customers?
Retractable awnings and motorized power screens carry our 15-year warranty on frames, hardware, motors, and fabric systems under normal use, and your customers claim through you — the local dealer they bought from. Training teaches the triage: what you diagnose and fix in the field, what gets a parts shipment, and what comes back to us. You are never left guessing on a claim, and your customer never waits on a faceless ticket queue. The warranty is a sales asset precisely because the service behind it is local.
