Tustin is the “City of Trees”, a historic Old Town of 1920s storefronts, the massive Tustin Legacy redevelopment rising on the old Marine air station (those two giant blimp hangars are hard to miss), and neighborhoods of all vintages in between. Inland-OC sun covers all of it. AJ Shades installs retractable awnings and motorized power screens from Old Town classics to Legacy new builds.
Old Town homes get the historic-sensitive survey, deep eaves, real framing, mounts that respect the architecture. Tustin Legacy’s new builds get the modern version: clean soffit mounts, motorized everything, wind sensors for Santa Ana season. Both get the same promise: free estimate, on site, in writing, with honest ratings.
Tustin's older neighborhoods near the 5 and the newer builds around the Marketplace have different shade needs but the same sun. The historic homes want discreet systems; the two-story tracts want screens on the upper west glass where the heat pours in. The marine influence keeps things milder than the inland valleys, but the afternoon sun still does its work.
The Artesia Pilar neighborhood and the Floral Park historic district represent opposite ends of Santa Ana's shade spectrum: one wants maximum cooling for the classic ranch floor plan, the other wants historically sensitive solutions. We've worked both, and the approach differs, but the sun doesn't, and the estimate always starts with an honest exposure map.
The Delhi and Cornerstone Village areas have the newer Santa Ana housing stock, and the same sun as the historic districts. What surprises newcomers is how much the shade matters for the single-story floor plans: without it, the living room is the hottest room in the house by mid-afternoon. With it, the whole house breathes easier and the AC cycles less.
Our 15-year warranty covers every retractable awning and motorized screen we install, built for the long haul and installed by our own crews. Estimates are always free, on site, and in writing, with financing with flexible options for qualified buyers. patio covers round out the offering for permanent roofed outdoor rooms, engineered for local wind loads and permitted properly.
Tustin summers do not negotiate. Triple-digit stretches park over the valley for weeks, and west-facing patios turn into griddles by mid-afternoon. Retractable awnings change the math: extended through the brutal hours, they throw deep shade over the patio and the glass behind it, then retract on a wind-sensor signal or a tap when the evening cools. It is the difference between a backyard you avoid from June to September and one you live in.
Most Tustin homes are stucco over wood frame, straightforward mounting when you know where the structure is. We find it: every awning is anchored into framing, not stucco alone, because inland winds find every shortcut. Older homes get a careful survey for eave depth and pitch; newer tracts get clean soffit and wall mounts. The estimate tells you which, in writing, before anyone drills.

The Tustin shade calendar
When to book your estimate.
Expect the first 100-degree week before summer even starts; inland heat arrives early and stays late. The play is a late-winter estimate, which means shade before the brutal stretch instead of scheduling around it. We give west-facing patios and windows priority since the 3-to-7 PM sun does the heaviest damage out here. Installs continue all summer, but spring is the first season to fill, so early callers choose the better calendar. Use a fall estimate to plan a full patio project over the holidays.

“AJ Shades did an excellent job installing our new motorized awning. From the first conversation to the final installation, the process was professional, clear, and easy. The awning looks great, works smoothly, and has completely changed how we use our patio. We were impressed with the quality of the materials, the Somfy motor, the built-in lighting, and the clean installation. You can tell this is not a cheap temporary shade product. It feels solid, looks high-end, and makes the backyard much more comfortable. Tony and the AJ Shades team were knowledgeable, respectful, and took the time to explain everything. We are very happy with the finished product and would definitely recommend AJ Shades to anyone looking for a premium retractable awning.”
