The motor is what makes a modern awning or screen convenient; the smart-home layer is what makes it automatic. Our systems run Somfy-powered motors and controls , Somfy is the industry-standard motor manufacturer, and its ecosystem is the reason a shade system can talk to the rest of your house. (Somfy’s US headquarters is in Irvine, practically our backyard, which means parts and support are local.) This guide covers what the smart layer does, what hardware it needs, and where the honest limitations are.
One clarification up front: we install Somfy-powered systems, we describe the motors and controls by their real manufacturer name because you deserve to know what’s in your quote. What follows is the practical truth about living with them.
Voice control: the feature you’ll actually use
Through the TaHoma smart-home hub, Somfy-powered awnings and motorized screens respond to Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home. The commands that earn their keep are the situational ones: “close the awning” when you see clouds building, “lower the west screens” when the 4 PM glare starts. It’s genuinely useful for anyone whose patio doors are twenty steps from the couch, which is everyone. Setup is on us: we pair the hub and your devices during installation and hand you a working system, not a box of instructions.
Phone control and schedules
The Somfy app turns your phone into a remote that works from anywhere, extend the awning before you get home from work, or retract everything from the office when a Santa Ana wind alert hits your phone. But the feature that quietly delivers the most value is scheduling: program the awning to extend during peak afternoon heat and retract at sundown, or drop the west screens at 3 PM daily through summer. Scheduled shade is shade you get without remembering to ask for it, which is the entire point of automation.
Wind-sensor auto-retract: the safety net
The smart-home feature that protects your investment is the wind sensor. It reads front-bar motion and retracts the awning automatically once gusts pass the set threshold, typically around 18 mph. It’s the backup for the gust you slept through or the storm that arrived while you were at work. Our doctrine: retract before the wind as a habit, and let the sensor be the safety net, never the plan. Full detail in our wind sensor guide.
What the system needs: hubs, power, and the electrician question
Voice control and phone-from-anywhere need the TaHoma hub, a small gateway device on your home network. Handheld remotes and wall keypads work on local radio without it. Power is the other question: Somfy’s WireFree solar-powered and battery-powered motors and sensors need no hardwiring at all, which covers most residential retrofits with zero electrical work. Hardwired motors are the exception, and they do need a licensed electrician for the line-voltage connection, we flag that on your written quote so it’s a planned line item, not a surprise.

What happens when the tech fails
Honest limitations, because every smart-home product has them. If your Wi-Fi goes down, you lose phone control and voice commands, but the wall keypads, handheld remotes, and manual overrides keep working, since they’re local radio, not Wi-Fi. Schedules tied to local scenes keep running. In a power outage, battery and solar-powered WireFree units keep operating; hardwired motors wait for the grid like everything else hardwired. And if a sensor stops responding, it’s usually a battery or a re-pair, a two-minute fix, not a system failure. The shade itself never depends on your router, your phone, or the cloud. That’s by design.
One remote for the whole patio
The real payoff comes when the system grows. Start with a retractable awning, add motorized screens a season later, and both join the same Somfy ecosystem, one app, one set of voice commands, scenes that move the awning and the screens together. “Movie night” extends the awning, drops the screens, and dims the LEDs. That coherence is why we standardize on one motor platform instead of mixing brands: your patio should feel like one system, because it is one system. Our Somfy automation service page covers the full capability list.
The bottom line
Smart control turns a motorized shade from a convenience into an automatic comfort system: scheduled for the heat, voice-controlled for the moment, sensor-guarded against the wind. Every Somfy-powered system we install carries our 15-year warranty on the awnings and screens themselves , because the automation should be the part you never think about, and the shade should be the part that lasts.
