Every awning company advertises a warranty. Few homeowners read one before signing. That is a shame, because the warranty is where the industry's real quality differences hide - in the exclusions, the prorating schedules, and the difference between "lifetime" as a marketing word and lifetime as a contractual promise. A fifteen-year warranty from a company that answers its phone is worth more than a "lifetime" warranty from a company that will not.

Here is our coverage, stated plainly, and then the literacy to evaluate anyone's: AJ Shades backs its retractable awnings and motorized power screens - the Quality Improvement Products line - with a 15-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. That is the headline. Everything below is how to read the fine print behind any headline, including ours.

Parts, labor, and the split nobody mentions

A warranty has two halves: the part and the labor to replace it. Many "long" warranties cover parts for a decade but labor for a year - which means in year six, the replacement arm is free and the service call is not. Neither half is dishonest on its own, but the headline number almost always describes the longer half. When a company quotes you a warranty length, your first question should be: "Is that parts and labor, or parts only after year one?"

The second question is who performs the work. A manufacturer warranty fulfilled by a local dealer you can call is a different product than a manufacturer warranty fulfilled by a call center three states away. We install what we sell across Southern California, so warranty service comes from the same crew that did the install - the people who already know your house.

The five questions that reveal a weak warranty

1. What exactly is excluded? Wind damage, acts of nature, and improper use are standard exclusions everywhere - the question is how the warranty defines them. "Damage from winds above the rated capacity" is fair. "Any weather-related damage" on a product that lives outdoors is a loophole you could drive a truck through.

2. Is coverage full or prorated? A prorated warranty pays a shrinking percentage as the product ages - 100% in year one, 50% in year five, 10% in year ten. Prorating is not a scam, but a "15-year prorated warranty" and a "15-year full warranty" are very different promises wearing the same number.

3. What are my maintenance obligations? Most warranties require basic care - keeping the fabric clean, retracting in storms, periodic inspection. That is reasonable. What you want to see is a clear, achievable list, not vague "proper maintenance" language that can be invoked to deny any claim. Our awning care guide covers the routine that keeps both the product and the coverage in good standing.

4. Is it transferable? If you sell the house in year seven, does the remaining coverage go with it? Transferable warranties are a genuine resale asset - and a company confident in its product has no reason to make coverage die with the original buyer.

5. Who do I call, and what is the claims process? The best warranty in the industry is worthless if claiming it requires a forty-five-minute hold and a fax machine. Ask for the process before you buy: one local number, a real human, and a service visit scheduled in days, not months.

Fabric, motors, and frames: what long coverage really means

On a premium retractable awning, the three components that matter are the fabric, the motor, and the frame hardware. Solution-dyed acrylic fabric - where the color runs through the fiber rather than sitting on the surface - is the reason long fade warranties exist at all; it is a fundamentally different product than printed canvas. Somfy motors, the industry standard we install, are built for thousands of open and close cycles. And the arms and brackets are powder-coated aluminum engineered for the rated wind load.

A 15-year warranty is the manufacturer and the dealer jointly betting that these components will last. That bet is only credible from companies with the track record to back it - which is why warranty length correlates so strongly with company age and reputation. A startup offering a lifetime warranty is making a promise its balance sheet may not survive to keep. Ask how long the company has been installing, and whether the warranty is backed by the manufacturer as well as the dealer.

Wind sensors: the warranty's best friend

Here is the practical move that protects both the awning and the coverage: a wind sensor. Most wind exclusions hinge on whether the awning was deployed in conditions beyond its rating - a judgment call that gets argued after the fact. A sensor removes the argument entirely by retracting the awning automatically when gusts pick up, whether you are home or not. It is a small add-on that eliminates the most common warranty dispute in the industry. Our wind sensor guide explains how they work.

What does NOT get the 15-year warranty

Precision matters here, because this is where the industry gets sloppy. The 15-year warranty covers retractable awnings and motorized power screens - the Quality Improvement Products line. It does not cover patio covers. Our patio covers carry their own warranty: 3 years on installation and a lifetime warranty on the product when built with Duralum. If you ever hear "15-year warranty" attached to a patio cover - from us or anyone - ask for it in writing, because that is not our coverage and it should not be anyone's claim.

The broader lesson: warranty terms should be product-specific. A company with one blanket warranty number across awnings, screens, covers, and shutters is marketing, not warranting. Real coverage is written per product line, because different products fail in different ways.

The bottom line on warranties

A warranty is a company's confidence made contractual. Fifteen years on awnings and power screens says: we expect these products to work for a decade and a half, and we will be here to prove it. Evaluate every warranty you are offered against the five questions above, get the terms in writing before money changes hands, and favor the company whose answers are specific over the one whose brochure is glossy.

Awning Warranty FAQ

Questions about retractable awning warranties

What does AJ Shades' warranty cover on retractable awnings and motorized screens?
Our retractable awnings and motorized power screens - the Quality Improvement Products line - carry a 15-year warranty. That covers the product itself: frame, arms, fabric, and motorization against defects in materials and workmanship. At your estimate we will put the exact coverage terms in writing before you sign anything.
Is the 15-year warranty transferable if I sell my home?
Warranty transfer rules vary by manufacturer and program, so this is one of the questions to ask in writing before you buy. A transferable warranty adds real resale value - buyers love seeing a decade-plus of coverage remaining on the patio. Ask us at your estimate and we will show you exactly how ours handles a sale.
What voids an awning warranty?
The usual suspects across the industry: leaving the awning deployed in high wind or storms against the manufacturer's guidance, unauthorized modifications or third-party repairs, and neglect like never cleaning the fabric. Normal use - deploying and retracting as designed - never voids coverage. A wind sensor is cheap insurance here: it retracts the awning automatically when you are not home to do it.
Does the warranty cover the fabric fading?
Premium solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are engineered to resist fading far longer than ordinary canvas, and long warranties reflect that. But 'fade coverage' is exactly the kind of line to read carefully in any warranty - some cover it fully, some prorate it, some exclude it. Ask for the fade terms specifically, in writing.
What about patio covers - do they get the 15-year warranty too?
No, and any company that tells you otherwise is blurring lines. Our patio covers carry a 3-year warranty on installation plus a lifetime warranty on the product when built with Duralum. Different product, different warranty - the 15-year coverage applies only to retractable awnings and motorized power screens.
