"Warranty" is the most quoted and least read word in the shade business. It appears in every brochure, every quote, every sales pitch - and it means wildly different things depending on who wrote it. A 15-year warranty that covers only the frame is not the same as a 15-year warranty that covers the motor, the mesh, the tracks, and the installation. This guide is the plain-English version of what warranty coverage means for motorized screens: what is covered, what is not, what factory service looks like when something actually breaks, and how to read anyone else's warranty with clear eyes.
Start with the headline, stated plainly: our motorized power screens carry a 15-year warranty. Not a limited pro-rated puzzle, not a headline number with the real coverage buried in exclusions - a 15-year warranty on the complete system, in writing, on your quote. The motor and controls, the cassette, the side tracks, the bottom bar, the mesh against manufacturing defects, and our installation. When we say factory service, we mean the company that built your system is the company that services it - our own crews, across San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.
Why does the distinction matter so much for screens in particular? Because a motorized screen is a moving machine that lives outdoors. It extends and retracts thousands of times through dust season in the Inland Empire, salt air in Newport Beach and Carlsbad, and Santa Ana gusts that test every component. The warranty is not a marketing line - it is the manufacturer's bet on its own engineering, and yours on who stands behind it. Here is how to read that bet.
Covered
What the 15-year warranty includes
The motor and controls - the heart of the system. This is the coverage homeowners ask about first, and it is the most complete. We install Somfy motors and controls - Somfy-powered automation engineered for tens of thousands of open-close cycles - and the motor, the receiver, the remote, and the control logic are all covered for the full 15-year term. If the motor fails under normal use, it is serviced or replaced under warranty. The one thing that shortens motor life is running it against resistance: a track packed with debris, a bottom bar snagged on something. Call at the first sign of strain - a hesitation, a new sound - and the motor stays a warranty non-event instead of becoming a repair.
The cassette, tracks, and bottom bar - the skeleton. The housing that protects the rolled mesh, the side tracks that guide it, and the weighted bar that keeps it taut are structural components, and structural components are covered against defects for the full term. A track that binds because of how it was extruded, a cassette end cap that fails, a bottom bar that warps without cause - these are manufacturing or installation matters, and factory service handles them. What moves a track problem out of warranty is impact: a ladder dropped against it, a mower throwing a rock, a kid hanging from the bar. The warranty covers the product failing; it does not cover the world hitting the product.
The mesh - against manufacturing defects. Mesh is the most exposed part of the system and the part most homeowners misunderstand. The warranty covers the mesh failing as a product: seam separations, premature material breakdown under normal use, defects in the weave or coating. It does not cover the mesh losing a fight with the physical world - pet claws, golf balls, wind-thrown branches, weed trimmers. This is why the care guidance matters: keep the tracks clear, retract in high wind, and the mesh stays in the covered category for the full 15 years. Our screen cleaning guide covers the routine that keeps it there.
The installation - our work, our responsibility. A screen mounted wrong fails early no matter how good the components are: tracks out of plumb bind, cassettes mounted to weak framing pull loose, wiring done sloppily corrodes. Our installation is warranted as part of the system because we install with our own trained crews - the same team that does your estimate does the work, and the same company answers when you call. There is no subcontractor to blame and no manufacturer-to-installer finger-pointing. One company, one warranty, one number to call.
Not covered
What the warranty doesn't do - honestly
A warranty you can trust is one that tells you its edges. Here are ours, without fine-print games. Damage from misuse or impact is not covered: the screen is engineered for sun, bugs, and breeze, not for baseballs, branches, or backing a car into the track. Unauthorized modifications void coverage - if someone other than us opens the motor housing, re-tensions the system, or rewires the controls, we can no longer stand behind what was changed. And neglect voids it too: tracks never cleared, the motor run for a season against packed debris, the screen left deployed through a windstorm it was never built for. Warranties cover defects, not neglect - the same line we draw on our retractable awnings, which carry their own 15-year warranty under the same principle.
Then there are the edge cases worth knowing before you buy. Power surges can damage electronic controls, and while surge damage is not a manufacturing defect, a quality surge protector on the circuit is inexpensive insurance we recommend at installation. Normal cosmetic weathering - the slow, even patina of a product living outdoors in Southern California sun - is not a defect; it is the product aging gracefully. And acts of nature beyond design limits - the branch the Santa Anas throw through the mesh - are what homeowners insurance is for, not the product warranty.
One more distinction, because competitors blur it: our patio covers carry a different warranty structure - a 3-year installation warranty plus a lifetime product warranty when built with Duralum. That is the right structure for a permanent structure, and it is not the 15-year screen warranty wearing a different name. If you are comparing a bundled project - screens plus a patio cover - get each product's warranty stated separately, in writing. Any quote that attaches the 15-year term to a patio cover, or the lifetime term to a screen, is a quote with an error in it. Ask which one, and get the correction in writing before you sign.
When something does go wrong within coverage, factory service works like this: you text or call us - (909) 325-3110, and a photo or short video usually tells us what we need - we diagnose, we schedule with the right parts, and our crew fixes it. No claim forms, no third-party runaround, no wondering whether the motor company or the installer is responsible. That is what "factory service" means when the factory and the installer are the same veteran-owned American company. And if you are still shopping, our motorized screen buying guide covers the full decision - mesh, mounting, and controls - before the warranty ever needs to matter.
