The fabric always dies first. That is not a flaw - it is the design: the fabric takes the full punishment of Southern California UV so the engineered hardware underneath does not have to. After a decade or so of sun, even good fabric fades, weakens, and eventually tears. And that is when most homeowners ask the wrong question: “How much is a new awning?” The right question is whether the awning needs replacing at all.

A reskin - industry shorthand for a fabric re-cover - keeps everything that still works (frame, folding arms, brackets, motor) and replaces only the wear item. The old fabric comes off, the frame gets inspected and serviced, and new solution-dyed acrylic is sewn to your awning’s exact dimensions, valance style, and trim. Done right, the awning that comes back looks and performs like a much younger version of itself, because structurally it is the same awning - just wearing new clothes.

The candidacy test is the frame. Straight arms with proper spring tension, solid brackets, a sound mounting surface, an undamaged roller tube - if those check out, reskinning is almost always the smart money. If the frame is bent, the arms are seized, or the mounting was never correct, no fabric in the world fixes that, and an honest company tells you so. Our awning repair service starts every reskin with exactly that inspection - and we have talked homeowners out of reskins their frames did not deserve.

What a quality reskin includes

More than just new fabric

The fabric: solution-dyed acrylic, measured to your frame. Not off-the-roll yardage - the new cover is sewn for your awning’s exact width, projection, and valance profile. Solution-dyed means the color runs through the fiber rather than sitting on the surface, which is why it holds color in desert sun that destroys printed fabrics. We bring real samples to the estimate so you choose in your own light, not from a screen. Our awning fabric guide breaks down the grades if you want the full education first.

The service: pitch correction, hardware check, and cleaning. A reskin is the perfect moment to fix everything the old fabric was hiding: re-pitching for proper water runoff (pooled water kills seams faster than sun), checking arm geometry and spring tension, torquing mounting hardware, and servicing the roller tube. It is also the ideal time to add the motor if you have been cranking manually - the tube is already accessible, so motorization during a reskin costs less than a separate visit later.

The honest math, in writing. After measuring, you get a written quote: fabric grade, valance options, any hardware the inspection flagged, and the optional motorization line item - each priced separately so you decide what the awning gets. If the frame fails the candidacy test, the quote becomes a replacement quote instead, and we will show you exactly why. Either way, you decide with the full picture. We reskin awnings across San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties; outside Southern California our products are available through our dealer network. Text us at (909) 325-3110 for the inspection - and keep reading in all our shade guides.

Reskin FAQ

Fabric replacement questions, answered

Can you just replace the fabric on a retractable awning?
Yes - if the frame, arms, and mounting are sound. Fabric is the wear item on every awning: UV breaks it down years before a quality frame shows its age. A reskin (or re-cover) removes the old fabric and sews new solution-dyed acrylic to your exact frame, arms, and valance profile. When the bones are good, a reskin effectively resets the clock for a fraction of replacement cost.
How do I know if my frame is worth reskinning?
The test is structural honesty: arms straight and properly tensioned, brackets solid, mounting surface sound, and the roller tube undamaged. Faded, torn, or sagging fabric alone is never a reason to replace the whole awning - that is exactly what a reskin fixes. What kills a reskin candidacy is a bent frame, seized components beyond economical repair, or a mounting that was never right. We inspect all of it and tell you straight which category yours falls in.
Can I upgrade to motorized during a fabric replacement?
Often, yes - and a reskin is the ideal moment. With the fabric off, the roller tube is accessible, which is exactly where a tubular motor lives. If you have been cranking a manual awning for years, adding the motor during the re-cover saves a second service call and gives you remote control plus the option of a wind sensor. We will confirm your frame accepts the motor before quoting it.
How long does new awning fabric last?
It depends on the fabric grade more than anything else. Premium solution-dyed acrylic - color locked into the fiber, not printed on the surface - is the industry's honest answer for Southern California sun, typically giving a decade or more with basic cleaning. Entry-level fabrics cost less and fade faster. We only reskin with fabrics we would put on our own homes, and we will show you the grade difference in samples, not just words.
Should I retract the awning in rain after a reskin?
Same rules as a new awning: quality acrylic sheds light rain fine, but retract for heavy rain and wind, and always retract when leaving the home unattended. Water pooling in the fabric belly is what destroys seams - proper pitch matters as much as the fabric itself, which is why every reskin includes checking and correcting the awning's pitch.
Is a reskin cheaper than a new awning?
Substantially - you are keeping the engineered hardware (frame, arms, brackets, motor) and replacing only the wear item. The exact math depends on your awning's size and the fabric grade you choose, and we put it in writing after measuring. One honest caveat: if the inspection finds the frame compromised, we will say so and quote the replacement instead. Selling a reskin onto a dying frame helps no one.
